Things in my head

Monday, November 3, 2008

Hallo, noble savages. So, I was thinking of this episode of Friends where Phoebe's brother comes to visit her and she is asking him questions, including what his likes and dislikes are. He says, "I like to melt stuff....and.....I dis-like stuff that doesn't melt." He tries to melt Phoebe's phone.

I mention this because I'm going to have a running like/dislike thing while I'm posting. Unless I forget halfway through.

I like microwave popcorn. I dislike microwave popcorn that only pops half of the kernels. My current favorite is Pop Secret "Homestyle," which, sadly, I am out of and tonight am having Orville Redenbacher's "Simply Salty," which TRIES to be Pop Secret "Homestyle" but fails. It's a decent alternative, but too greasy. And only half the bag popped.

I also like air-popped popcorn. I dislike air poppers that I've had for 11 years that suddenly break just because they get dropped on the floor.

So, some day we're going to build a house. On a few acres. We've already picked out the house. Rather, I've picked out the house and R likes it but is unwilling to commit. We found the plan in a book I got for $5 at DI a few months ago. The book is called 1250 Best-Selling Home Plans (you can see them, plus the ones no one really likes, at their website: http://www.familyhomeplans.com/ ). Ours is plan #32046. Here it is: This is an artists rendering of the front (okay, duh).
Important housie details:
4,292 sq. feet
1st floor finished: 1,928
2nd floor finished: 2,364 (because it extends out over the garage)
5 bedrooms
4 full baths
1 half bath

The exterior will be a light sage green, if that's still my favorite color by the time we get around to building this house.

Photograph of someone's house built with this plan. We love the front porch.
Incidentally, this home plan cannot be built within a 20-mile radius of Hillsboro County, Florida.
Huh.

This house is grey. I think that's a mistake.

This is the layout of the main floor. My favorite parts of it are the kitchen, family room, mud room and play room :) R likes the big covered porches and the french doors. I like those things, too.

Yes, the 2nd floor. My favorite things are the landing on the stairs and the AWESOME Master Suite. Not just a master bedroom, a flippin' Master SUITE. And I like the dormer windows in the two front bedrooms. Perfect for window seats. Notice the 2nd floor laundry. Nice.

This is the back view, which made both R and I go, "ahhhhh," and heave heavy sighs of longing. Every single one of those 2nd story windows belong to the Master SUITE.

Breakfast nook :) Whoever dressed this house for the pictures ought to be ashamed of themselves. It gets worse in the next picture.

I like this home plan. I dislike what the people did to the inside of this awesome house.

The family room looks smaller in the picture than it does in the plan. Hm. Anyway, we have different ideas for this room than these people. We picture the hearth higher off the ground, with built-in cabinetry underneath, possibly pine, matching the built-in bookshelves on either side. And instead of a whole mantle, a big, rough, found-wood shelfie deal.

And carpet instead of dirty, dusty, cold-foot hardwood. Except in the kitchen of course. I liked the bamboo flooring at mom's and Tessa's houses; I told R about it. So, maybe bamboo in the kitchen/nook. The word nook makes me think of the word nooky. Totally different, I know, and I think the word nooky is ridiculous for what it means. I mean, aren't there enough synonyms for that? What's up with the word nooky? It sounds like binky. Or Wookie.

Moving on.

So that's all the pictures of the house. It's fun having real live pictures, but I wish they'd taken MORE! I want to see the Master Suite! I want to see the mudroom! I want to see it all! Well, someday I will. Provided I haven't lost my eyesight due to old age when it's finally built. I envision it full of kids and their friends and later their spouses and kids and everyone coming over at holidays and birthdays and eating food and making noise. "My dream is to sit on the porch and be covered in grand children and say, "no!" and "stop that!"" Quick! What's that from? Hint: it's said with a genteel South'n accent.

R's air compressor just came on in the garage. He was using it yesterday. Hmmm...forgot something?? It goes on, builds pressure and then stops for awhile until the pressure drops (or you use the air) and then it comes back on and builds pressure again. It's very loud. I had to go out and turn it off and release the air. Silly husband.

The silly husband is at work right now. It's 11pm, by the way. They're doing light retrofitting in a bunch of Dan's grocery stores, so they work at night while the store is closed. Tonight was a school night, so when the job started at 8pm R was at school. School is over around 9:45 - 10 and he leaves for work then. Right now, work is in Park City, which is about an hour away, through the canyon. The next job is in Logan, which is also an hour away. Since school is Mon and Wed, R misses a total of 6 hours of work every week, which is expensive. They work four 10's so his boss said if he comes in on Friday (his day off) there might be some work he could do around the shop to make up for missing the time for school.

R gets home around 7am and goes to bed at noon. He wakes up around 6pm and, on school days, leaves at 6:30. On other days, he sticks around till about 6:45, woot!

Speaking of school, having him home in the mornings has totally thrown our home school out of whack. If I ever have errands to run I would usually do them in the evening after R got home - now if I want to go somewhere with no kids (like Christmas shopping...or whatever) I have to do it in the morning. R always wants to run errands in the morning, and usually we all go. Usually we start school at 10 but that keeps not happening, and then it never happens! This week I'm going to start having us do chores in the morning and school in the afternoon after daddy is in bed and we've had lunch. We also need to remember to have Family Home Evening on Monday during the day. We did last week but forgot today.
Then the weekend comes and the poor guy's sleep is all messed up again. He naps on Friday morning when he gets home from Thursday night work. Then he's just up all day and we usually go to bed late because it's Friday. Saturday he's usually alright but by Sunday his body is all confused and he crashes on the couch in the afternoon.

I like that R has a job. I dislike this job schedule.

I need to go switch the laundry and go potty and brush my teeth and wash my face and read my scriptures and say my prayers and go to bed. I'm especially looking forward to washing my face, which feels icky and rather tar pit-ish. Wash, dry, then acne treatment followed directly by anti-aging moisturizer. *sigh* So wrong. I like having a face. I dislike having a face with both pimples and wrinkles. Well, I'll be honest, I don't mind wrinkles and I like my laugh lines. What I don't like, or dislike, if you will, are the deep lines on my forehead and around my mouth. I'm going to splurge on good stuff this week - Olay is bogo at Rite Aid AND I have coupons. Sweet.

I have an assignment for everyone before I go. Watch a movie called Dan in Real Life. WATCH IT! Then tell me how much you loved it. I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! I dislove movies that aren't as good as Dan in Real Life.
Okie doke I'm off to bed now.
